The 'Whole Building' Approach to Designing Sustainable, Secure Buildings

Capsule Summary
This is a new two-day workshop is being offered by SBIC.

Architects, engineers, building owners and managers in both the public and private sector have come to realize that an integrated design approach is critical to achieving truly high-performance buildings. This approach is premised on a 'whole building' understanding and requires an analysis of the interdependencies of systems. For example, consideration of site access, building orientation, and storm water runoff are codependent; so too are HVAC, fire protection, security and acoustics. It is no longer acceptable for a building system to be designed as if it had no effect on other systems and other design decisions.

Key Topics Covered

Topics include daylighting, natural ventilation, and passive solar heating, energy-efficient lighting/systems, building integrated photovoltaics, HVAC control strategies, distributed energy generation, acoustics and security. The curriculum is designed to help participants gain a more thorough understanding of water conservation, indoor environmental quality, site planning and building design issues. Instructors will demonstrate some of the latest energy-efficient design software, such as Energy-10 (Version 1.8), review the Internet-based Whole Building Design Guide, and discuss the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Rating System®, as well as the Energy Star® label for buildings and equipment.

Who Should Attend

Engineers, architects, building owners and managers, federal, state and local government officials, and college and university facility managers all will find valuable information in this workshop, whether they are planning, designing, administering, operating and/or maintaining their facilities.
