FEMP: Design Strategies for Low-Energy, Sustainable, Secure Buildings

About the Program
Buildings designed with an integrated, "whole building" approach use significantly less conventional energy, make more effective use of renewable energy, have better indoor environmental quality, and are more healthful places to live and work. With this principle in mind, SBIC has developed a two-day workshop titled Design Strategies for Low-Energy, Sustainable, Secure Buildings in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

This workshop series is designed for both federal managers and private sector architects and engineers. Expert instructors address issues such as:

  • The integrated design process
  • Achieving security and sustainability in U.S. buildings
  • Site issues and solar geometry
  • Insulation/glazing/shading
  • Daylighting and lighting
  • Passive solar/thermal mass/ photovoltaics
  • Heating, venting, and air conditioning (HVAC) and commissioning
  • Indoor environmental quality
  • Water service systems
  • Building design and analysis tools and resources

The mission of the U.S. DOE FEMP program is to equip federal managers with knowledge about energy efficiency and water conservation, the use of distributed and renewable energy, and the improvement of utility management decisions at federal sites in order to lower the cost of running the federal government.  Private sector building professionals will also find the information applicable to the design and construction of residential and commercial buildings.

This workshop will help you meet the sustainability objectives laid out in Executive Order 13123: Greening the Government Through Efficient Energy Management.

Energy Policy Act of 2005 (pdf - 1926.3KB), and

Technical Guidance for Implementing the Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings Memorandum of Understanding

No FEMP workshops are scheduled at this time.  Custom workshops for your company, organization, or agency are available.
