The WBDG is the only web-based portal providing government and
industry practitioners with one-stop access to up-to-date
information on a wide range of building-related guidance,
criteria and technology from a 'whole buildings' perspective.
Currently organized into two major categories—Design Guidance
and Project Management—at the heart of the WBDG are Resource
Pages, reductive summaries on particular topics.
Development
of the WBDG is a collaborative effort among federal agencies,
private sector companies, non-profit organizations and
educational institutions. Its success depends on industry and
government experts contributing their knowledge and experience
to better serve the building community.
The WBDG web site is offered as an assistance to building
professionals by the National Institute of Building Sciences
(NIBS) through the funding of the NAVFAC Engineering Innovation
and Criteria Office, the U.S. General Services Administration
(GSA), the Department of Energy (through the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory (NREL)), and the assistance of SBIC. A Board
of Direction and Advisory Committee, consisting of
representatives from over 25 participating federal agencies,
private sector companies, and non-profit organizations, guide
the development of the WBDG.

SBIC and the Whole Building Design Guide
The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council has been a
national leader in defining a coherent approach to integrated,
'whole building' design since its inception in 1980. This
approach favors sustainability as a prominent design objective
for all buildings while always maintaining a proper balance with
seven other attributes: aesthetic, accessible, cost effective,
flexible, productive, safe, and secure.
In 1997, Naval Facilities Criteria Office was looking for ways
to leverage the shrinking technical and financial resources they
used to update hundreds of paper-based criteria documents.
SBIC's members and staff helped conceptualize the Whole Building
Design Guide website to help address this growing problem. The
website became the first electronic portal to provide free
access to government-wide, buildings-related criteria, guidance,
and best practices.
Currently an Advisory Committee consisting of
representatives from federal
agencies, private sector companies, and nonprofit
organizations guides the development of the WBDG.
SBIC continues its involvement with the WBDG by
promoting its use and community-wide acceptance among
our active membership and partners. Special thanks to SBIC
members Bion Howard, Deane Evans, and Don Prowler for their
vision and invaluable participation.
