Residential Program

Goals of the Program

SBIC’s residential program is geared toward educating builders and home buyers on the fundamentals of green home design:

  • Community and site planning

  • Renewable energy and energy efficiency strategies

  • The building envelope

  • Efficient water use (both indoor and outdoor)

  • Indoor environmental quality

  • Green materials

  • Homeowner operations and maintenance

We offer the following products and services:

We also offer sponsorship opportunities for members and partners.

Every year millions of homes are built in the United States, buildings that consume approximately 20 percent of America's energy every year thereafter. By applying no-cost and low-cost design principles, we can lower the energy consumption of future housing stock by 30 to 50 percent.

Homes consume 20 percent of America's energy.

Green Building Guidelines©

SBIC's Green Building Guidelines: Meeting the Demand for Low-Energy, Resource-Efficient Homes©, now in its fourth edition, is the cornerstone of our residential program. Written by home builders for home builders, it is the only nationally distributed primer of its kind on green home design.

SBIC members and staff provided the framework for the book with technical support from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Building Technology and the U.S. DOE's Building America program. Click here to order or to learn more.

The Green Building Guidelines provides detailed technical tips and diagrams.

Green Building Guidelines© Workshop and Seminar Series

SBIC offers a national series of workshops and seminars targeted at home builders but also appropriate for architects, contractors, remodelers, home buyers, and others interested in responding to the increasing number of requests for greener homes. Using the Green Building Guidelines© as a reference, the workshops and seminars cover design strategies for better siting and orientation, energy-efficiency, passive solar techniques, natural ventilation, water conservation, and resource-efficient building materials, while encouraging participants to think about these issues in an integrated way. Expert instructors teach green construction tips and analyze market data that have been developed to help builders get a jump on their local competition.

Contact SBIC to bring a half-day Green Building Guidelines© seminar to your region or learn about sponsorship opportunities, learn more about the workshop and seminar series, or check the current schedule of events for dates and locations.

Instructor David Johnston discusses the finer points of green marketing.
