History of the Awards Program
In 2001 SBIC established its own Awards Program to recognize the exceptional contributions its members make to sustainability across the United States. Since its inception, the "Best Sustainable Practice" Award has been open to all SBIC members, many of whom continue to set the standard for energy- and resource-efficient design in America’s buildings.

Beginning in 2004, SBIC expanded its awards program to all building professionals (both SBIC members and nonmembers) under the "Exemplary Sustainable Buildings" Award, which recognizes outstanding buildings that have incorporated whole building design principles.
