Honorary Members


SBIC established the Honorary Members category to recognize those who have made exemplary contributions to the Council and to sustainable building in America. Please visit our In Memoriam page to learn more about past Honorary Members.

 

Members can submit the name of another member, or former member, for consideration to become an honorary member. Nominations can be submitted at any time and are reviewed by the SBIC Nominations Committee. Final recommendations of the Committee are reviewed by the Board of Directors. 

To nominate an individual for Honorary Membership, visit our Contact the Council page and use the online form. In the "Comment or Question" field, be sure to include the following information: 1) the name and organization of your nominee, 2) a brief description of their special contribution to SBIC and sustainable buildings in general, 3) SBIC Committees served on (if applicable), 4) Offices held at SBIC (if applicable), and 5) special projects completed.
 

SBIC Lauds the Contributions of...

 

Mary-Margaret Jenior, former program manager for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs. Mary-Margaret has worked closely with the Council's Technical Committee during the development of the Energy-10 program.

 

David Johnston, President of What’s Working. David was the founder of the Passive Solar Industries Council (later to become SBIC) in Washington, D.C. He has 25 years of experience designing, building, and consulting in the environmental construction industry. He was a co-author of the Denver HBA Green Builder Program, The city of Boulder Green Points program, city of Los Angeles Sustainable Building Program, and the Alameda County Waste Management Authority’s Green Building Guidelines.

 

Stephen Szoke, Director, Codes and Standards, Portland Cement Association. Mr. Szoke began his activates in energy conservation, renewable energy, and passive solar research, development, design, and standardization in 1977 as Senior Staff Engineer with the Brick Institute of America, now the Brick Industry Association (BIA), a founding member of SBIC. He has actively participated in and chaired the SBIC Technical Committee. He has authored papers, articles, and BIA literature on passive solar and energy efficient building design. While serving as the National Accounts Program Director for the National Concrete Masonry Association (another founding member of SBIC) from 1986 to 1996, Mr. Szoke expanded his activities to include energy code development and served as chair of SBIC from 1988 to 1992. He was a principle reviewer of the Designing Low-Energy Buildings with Energy-10 program.

 

John Heslip (retired) was president and CEO of the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) from 1985 through 1995. Mr. Heslip led NCMA, a founding member of SBIC, in the association's energy conservation and passive solar research activities. As an active member of SBIC, he was involved in the development of education efforts to advance the understanding of energy conservation to the design and building communities and to Congress. He previously served as president of the Masonry Institute of Michigan (1969-1983), where he led the state's energy conservation program development, including producing successful prototypes for passive solar housing.
